Hiking Diamond Hill
Hiking. It’s required for Rank, and the Hiking Merit Badge is required for Eagle (though Scouts can opt for Cycling or Swimming Merit Badges as alternatives). It’s also no joke. The Hiking Merit Badge requires Scouts to complete one 5 mile hike, three 10 mile hikes, one 15 mile hike, and one 20 mile hike. With each hike having to be completed in a single day (hiking plus camping is for the Backpacking Merit Badge).
Due to pandemic restrictions, RI Scouts also aren’t allowed to leave Rhode Island. Fortunately, Rhode Island is flush with fantastic trails.
In conjunction with our hiking exploits. We’re also taking advantage of the opportunity to work on map, compass, and orienteering skills.
This particular adventure saw Troop 12 out on a 5 mile trail by Diamond Hill right here in Cumberland, RI.
